Today's Everyday Fashion: Which Boots

These?

Or these?

I think I like the first ones better for night, and the second ones better for a daytime event? What do you guys think? (I'm trying to decide which pair to pack for Austin.)

Also - I wore the second outfit (flat boots) in Paris, and have never experienced so many people pointing and talking about me in my life! My goal for dressing in Paris was not to look like a Parisian, but a stylish American (trying to own my tourist-y self), so I totally get that I might have stood out. But to this day I'm still not sure why my outfit was such a topic of conversation! It was super comfy for a day at the Louvre, and I personally felt very good in it. But if you are European or spent a lot of time there, I would love to hear your theories, because it still puzzles me and I love learning about dress codes in other cultures! :-) Was I breaking an unspoken code?

When I (I am from Germany) looked at your outfits for your trip to Europe they looked totally fashionable and how girls would dress over here. If people talked about your boots then in a positive way! I have very similar boots like yours from Zara and people ask a lot where they are from...

I like the first pair of boots. Never say no to heels ;)

When I lived in Spain in 2005, tall, flat boots were all the rage.  Perhaps they were remembering them from a few years back and admiring how they have stood the test of time.

love the look with the first pair of boots - looks so polished!

YOU SHOULD WEAR DRESSES MORE OFTEN! Love the first look

I am French and I think people were commenting very positively on your outfit and how you looked. I think it is both casual and sexy (in general, French woman do not wear too revealing outfits and they try to not overdo it when they want to be sexy: for example, if their eyes are heavily made up, their mouth is an almost nude colour; or if they wear something that hugs the hips, they do not show their cleavage). And they generally wear a lot of neutrals. You look quite French to me in that oufit, except that maybe a French woman would have a bit less make up (it is not a criticism, of course).

love the first pair of boots!

love the first pair! I have been looking for a nice pair of brown boots with a comfy heel.
I live in Chicago so I can still get a lot of wear out of them! btw. very few people can pull of a sweater dress, you totally rock it!

I like the first boots with that dress!

I think the first pair are definitely more flattering, but the second are more casual-looking :)

I like the first pair better. Your dress is fitted & I like the first pair the best bc they are fitted.

Another vote for the first pair! I think they go better with the clean lines of the dress.

I like the first ones better. I think the heel gives you nice height.

I agree with this.  Much cleaner lines, much more chic.

The first boots look better for sure.

I LOVE that sweater dress! And very interesting story about the reaction to your outfit in Paris! I'm sure it was good - you look great, very casual! And plus, you rock that dress! (Go with the first high heeled boots, but you should know I'm partial to high shoes.)

I think they were simply admiring your figure. I know I was!

The first pair! You look great in this. I love mixing neutrals.

I love the first pair of boots with this outfit! I feel like the second pair would look better with jeans. I agree with the others, the Parisians must've just been admiring your outfit because you're so stylish!

first boots waaaaaaay better. i'm a flats girl at heart, but i can't deny that heels make every outfit look so much more put together.

*blushing* Thank you!

Thank you! It was a very interesting day. None of my other outfits got this reaction, so it definitely stood out! And I'm also partial to heels. ;-)

Thank you so much Rosalie for helping me solve this little international mystery! I love it! (and *sigh* do I miss Paris right about now!)

Thank you Imke! Good to know! :-)

I love the outfit with both, but would choose the flat boots! I'm not French and sadly don't live in Europe lol, but I'd say they were definitely admiring your outfit, it's gorgeous and you look amazing in it!

Stephanie said...

I love the first ones for a more sophisticated or professional look. But the second pair look great for something more casual! I love the color combo, too. The caramely brown looks great with the gray!

Sharon Farr said...

I much prefer the first ones mainly that flats make me look so short (I am only 5' 1"). I think your outfit is sexy and classy

I vote for the top boots. And the same thing happened to me in Italy. I think it's the blonde hair.  I had to physically turn around and shout 'Leave me alone' to one guy that was following me on the streets in Rome.

Oh my goodness, that is crazy! It wasn't really male attention in Paris, it was mostly women and definitely seemed to be about my outfit/and maybe my blonde hair. Good to know!

Lindsay [Bella Cene'] said...

I love the first pair... They are polished and perfect for the outfit! I think the 2nd pair would look great with jeans and a sweater. :)

Sass-i said...

I like them both, but the flats are more fun and flirty, simple and comfy, yet stylish, hip and ready to do anything at the same time.  The heels are more flashy/sexy and would be great for a specific event or outing to make a statement.

Love the first pair! The dark brown leather looks very polished and I guess you can wear it at day too provided you do not have to walk a lot!

Come on J.? I found this post to be slightly snobby. I have been living in Europe for many many years and I have to tell you don't stand out in any way, good or bad, at least not enough to be pointed at or talked about. Also, nothing about you screams "American", though I'm not really sure what you even mean by "looking american"? Your look is pretty typical so unless ur wearing a flag on top of your head nothing says where ur from. And we have blondes here as well. Only they are not so tanned. Oh, wait? ..

Melissa said...

J!  I'll be at SXSW, if I see you I'll come say hi!  Are you going for Interactive or for the music festival? You'll recognize me cause I'll be wearing a J's-style outfit haha. Have fun!

Emily @ Glitz Glam Granola said...

You look amazing in that dress!! I really like it with the first pair not as much because of the height but because it's a cleaner line without the cuff! Such a cute outfit! That's odd about the people in Paris but I bet they were just admiring your look!

jseverydayfashion said...

Melissa, yes please do say hello! (in your J outfit LOL!) I'm going for Interactive. Chevy selected me as a team captain this year so they are bringing me there as part of a promotion/charity fundraiser! :-)

Pm50x said...

First ones, definitely.  Or a low classic heel - just to be different.

The second boots are elf like. Stop wearing them. I vote for the first ones. Clean lines.

jseverydayfashion said...

I actually think they are more Robin Hood-esque than anything, but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do. The flat boots are insanely comfy and warm - but way more stylish than sneakers or Uggs, so on some occasions like 12 hours of sightseeing they are perfect! You gotta remember that this is fashion for real life, not a catalog. :-)

Nikki F. said...

I appear to be vastly outnumbered, but I actually like the flat boots better for the occasion. They're a little more fun and funky, which I think is a better fit for Austin and SXSW.

I like the first look better. But then again flat boot/comfort are great is you are traveling, doing a lot of walking, or live in a city like me : )

1st. I have an issue with the folded part of the 2nd pair. Every time I see this style of boot I think of Link from the Legend of Zelda video games.

This dress just literally made me giddy! I love that it looks like long johns on the top!!!

I like the second pair better. The dress is pretty casual, and I think the flat boots go with it better. There is also something about the heels on the first pair that just don't do it for me...Hopefully this doesn't come across as rude, but they make me think of go-go boots (but brown instead of white).

Erin said...

Robin Hood-esque. Lol you're funny, J. I love both pairs. I think the first pair takes the dress up a notch since it's a casual dress. Whereas I think the second pair of boots (your Hood boots hee, hee) look best with a pair of jeans tucked in. You have such great legs and I think the tighter fit of the first pair of boots is more chic with a bare leg. :)

Wuwuska said...

Ok J, how in the world did you make the exact same poses with each of the boots? it feels like find 5 differences :D
I am all the way for the first pair of boots. The dress and your legs just look better when you have some kind of a heel in my opinion. I am not a fan of flat boots with dresses or skirts. And as many others already mentioned, the first look looks more polished.

jseverydayfashion said...

Oh my gosh this made me laugh! They really are similar, aren't they! :-) Thank you for your vote! I wound up bringing the first boots with me and am hoping to have a chance to wear that outfit at some point.

The top pair of boots look best I think. Love the dress! http://www.fashionatabargain.blogspot.com/

I LOVE this dress on you--I am such a pushover for grey with brown or tan leather accessories and this looks great. Slightly prefer the boots with the heel.

Sparklbarby said...

I think the first pair are much more flattering to the (great!) shape of your legs. I'm not sure if it is the bulkiness of the second pair or the place the hit your calves (or both), but I think the first pair are not only better with the dress, but better with your shape.

notimeforstyle.blogspot.com said...

Very nice outfit - I love this color combination!

Erin said...

Definitely the heels!   The flats look better with a more casual outfit (jeans, mostly) so now that yo have the option of the heels I'd go with that!

J, love the sweater dress!! Sexy, yet classy. I am a proud Austinite and one of the great things about living in ATx is that the style is so eclectic; you'll find a little bit of everything here. You will probably be one of the best dressed anyhow. So I say go with whichever are most comfy! And put suede protector on your shoes because you never know when it could rain. They say in Tx if you don't like the weather, wait an hour itll change. :)

Between the two - I vote the first. I have a few personal style opinions about both. It's hard to tell but the first pair's heel looks a little clunky (and not in a modern way, more of a circa 2001 way) and like others said the second pair's fold makes it a little distracting. i think a sleek riding boot (low wedge perhaps?) would be an over all winner.

I clicked through to see the top boots more closely and I think I'm off on the clunkiness, but with the sleek silhouette of the outfit, I think it makes them appear more so.

Making sense? even a little bit?

workitChristine said...

I like them both! even though they are basically the same it is amazing what a difference a heel makes to take an outfit to the next level of "fancy-ness"

Having spent a lot of time in Europe, I agree with other posters that your boots are perfectly fashionable there. Perhaps the only reason they might have drawn some extra attention was if it was still fairly warm - September is practically summer in many places. Living in a colder climate, I know I don't drag mine out for a while and try to hang onto the summer clothes for a while longer!

gulyaska said...

The second pair, I'd say, I love the way flat boots "dress down" a dress showing off your figure, I wear them all the time (with much worse legs I have to admit). As a European who lived in Paris too, your outfit was perfect, that's what they were talking about. If I learned one thing about fashion and/or outfits in Paris is that if you're always sure of what you're wearing, they're gonna think you're the best dressed ever. That'as what la Parisienne (women from Paris) does.

Thank you for this feedback! I was definitely feeling confident (despite the pointing) so it sounds like that helped! Glad to know I wasn't making a huge faux pas, thank you! :-)
