Video: How To Belt a Cardigan

People ask me all the time to show them how to belt a cardigan, so I thought I'd put together a little video and show you guys! My method doesn't require pnching any new holes in your belt. Let me know what you think, and feel free to suggest ideas for future videos!

So glad you posted this, I've been wondering how to get this look :)

Oooohh video! That was a great demonstration. I've often tried to use belts like those, but never can figure out how to move the prong(s) to the side. After watching you, I'm going to try again. I agree with Lisa, videos are a great idea!

J. What a great idea to create videos like this. I really love it. Will you consider putting together more videos ? It really helps people like me ... I love fashion and often times I wish I had somebody to tell me how to combine colors and pieces. I shop at The Limited store almost once a week, but I need a lot of ideas to dress.
Thank you so much.

Love the video! I always wondered how you did the skinny belt with looping the tongue over and by seeing you do it it makes total sense now! Now I'm going to try it - and feel more confident now doing it the right way! Thanks so much J!

Great video! Can you tell me why you move the prongs to the side and don't just use the belt like a regular belt with the prongs through the holes? (Or maybe I am confused on what you mean by "prongs to the side"). Thanks so much!

Thanks everyone! I am definitely planning on doing more video how-to in the future.

Anonymous, moving the prong to the side keeps you from having to add extra holes to the belt. When I wear these belts around my hips, I can just use the holes. But I'm using the same belt around the waist, so I'm at least 3-4 inches away from the last hole on the belt. When you loop the way I show it creates leverage, so you don't even need to use a belt hole to keep it in place.

You are SO cute!

So I'm confused too like "Anonymous"...does the belt prong not actually go through the hole in the belt? How does that work? I've always struggled with belts not having the right holes for tighter belts and this would solve the problem if that's the case and I can figure it out! :)

By the way, when I was choosing outfits for my trip last weekend, I often thought, "What would J do?" True story. :)

Teri, you are SO cute. Love that you thought of me when packing. :-)

So, to answer your question: the belt does NOT go through any hole in the belt. Just get that pesky metal tongue out of the way by moving it to the side, and when you loop it through the belt loop, it will create enough leverage to stay in place on its own!

Great video! I see people doing this wrong all the time, it's not as easy as it looks!

I must have the wrong kind of belts - none of my prongs slide! :(

JsEverydayFashion said...

Teri, every belt is different, but I don't think I've come across one that the prong won't move over. It doesn't actually "slide" - you just move it over enough to slide the belt past it. The more you do it with a belt, the easier it becomes. Let me know if that works?

Can you show an upclose view of moving the prongs out of the way? wonder if its just my belt. trying to belt it but still have a little bit of the prong showing or sticking out and doesn't seem right. thanks!

I love your blog and your style, but can you do somerhing a little more trendy at least once a month ?
When I say trendy I mean more exclusive, at least just for the fun of it ?

I love it! Thank you! I kept getting it wrong and your trick with buttoning the cardi and then unbuttoning it later is truly the trick! Thank you, J! You are the best!

I have a question! (not belts, boots this time)
Can I wear tall boots under jeans if you can SEE the boot line through the jeans a bit?
I have beautiful black boots, and super long jeans- artist fit...a tiny bit of a bell, and some fabulously muscular calves. I don't want to tuck the jeans inside, so can I still wear them together?
I asked a fashionable girl at school, and she told me to buy different jeans... but I cant! I love them!

JsEverydayFashion said...

karlekgirl, that is a tough call. If the boots are sticking out so much that they actually are making the jeans stick out, then I would skip that combo and try something else. If it's just a line you can see though (rather than a line that's affecting the jeans), then you are fine! :-)

I've never thought of moving the prong to the side! Thanks!

I never wear belts over my cardigan.  I tried it this morning and my fiance told me I looked funny.  I quickly pulled up your video and tried again.  He cracked up laughing.  I follow your blog religiously!

So funny! With the right cardigan, I think belts are the best!! I hope you were able to make your fiance a believer. ;-)
